Panthers Release Jake Delhomme

Despite giving Jake Delhomme a contract extension last offseason that included $20 million in guaranteed money, the Panthers have released the veteran quarterback.

As first reported by Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Carolina decided to part ways with their much-maligned QB just prior to the start of free agency.

Delhomme signed a five-year, $42.5 million extension in 2009, despite committing six turnovers in Carolina's playoff loss to Arizona just weeks earlier. He threw 18 interceptions this past season -- compared to just eight touchdowns -- and eventually lost his starting job to Matt Moore.

Moore, not coincidentally, was given the highest tender possible this week by the Panthers -- a first- and third-round tender. A restricted free agent, Moore, 25, threw eight TDs and two picks in five starts for Carolina in 2009 and seemed prepared to battle Delhomme for the starting spot in 2010.

Delhomme's pending release no doubt means that the Panthers will completely turn their offense over to Moore.
